can't pick up pieces to move them. please provide instructions on how to play this game. I have searched the internet to no avail.

There are instructions noted at start of the game.

The game is not to pick up spheres, you essentially place spheres next to your opponents that are opposite to your colour. As player your red. If you had a red, green, green placement you can put a sphere at the end of this making it all turn red, red, red, red which is what gets you the points.

All placements are diagonals and straight lines.

I spent half an hour dragging my cursor across thru around and the only color they were is gray. soooooo, not sure what was going on

You don't drag the spheres, you click the grey ones.

It is essentially called "othello" or "reversi" in some places.. typing either of these two words should yield some guides. Heh, it was meant to be the harder version of four-in-a-row which is a harder version of
"tic-tac-toe".
